6. SOUNDBITE (English) Chmouel Lubecki, Rouen synagogue rabbi:
"We discovered this at 6:30 in the morning. I live in front of the synagogue. My wife saw some smoke going from the synagogue and she heard a scream. We didn't think something like this was coming from the synagogue."
7. Mid of Lubecki with journalists
8. SOUNDBITE (English) Chmouel Lubecki, Rouen synagogue rabbi:
"It's terrible. The whole synagogue was on fire. The Sefer Torah, the rolls of Torah, was in security thank god, I take it back to my home but the whole synagogue was smoking (burnt)."
9. Wide of police car with officers at security cordon

11. SOUNDBITE (English) Chmouel Lubecki, Rouen synagogue rabbi
"We have the police every Shabbath. We hold the office, every Shabbath and we have the police in front of the synagogue. We're never in security (safe). That's the situation in France but the police do everything to make ourselves to be in security (safe). But this, you see, it happened six o'clock in the morning. We don't know when it can happen. We have this scare, this fear, every time, the whole day."
12. Mid of police and security cordon
13. SOUNDBITE (English) Chmouel Lubecki, Rouen synagogue rabbi:
"We need to be strong. This is my message to the community. We need to be strong. Tonight we need to put the candle of Shabbath. We need to don't (not) let antisemitism take our Judaism. We need to be strong. We need to go to the synagogue. And yes, we need to be not afraid, but to reinforce the security around us, to look everywhere. But we don't need to be afraid. We need to be strong and do Judaism in France and not be scared of everybody."
14. Mid of police and security cordon
15. SOUNDBITE (French) Natacha Ben Haim, head of Rouen Jewish community:
"It's a lot of emotions since this morning, a lot of sorrow, a lot of sadness. We're a small town community and even if, after the October 7 attacks, after this massacre, we had become more cautious, we were on the look-out, we couldn't imagine that it would happen all the way in Rouen, that's a fact."
16. Mid of police van and officers outside synagogue
17. SOUNDBITE (French) Natacha Ben Haim, head of Rouen Jewish community:
"I saw that everything was destroyed inside. The assailant threw an incendiary object inside through a small dormer that he most certainly broke into. The fire started then, very quickly apparently, and the damage is considerable. We managed to save the Sefer Torah, but parts of the wall fell, the ceiling too. Everything is charred, it's a catastrophe. Everything is destroyed."
18. Various of police investigator with electronic device outside synagogue
STORYLINE:
The rabbi at the synagogue that was set on fire in the Normandy city of Rouen on Friday said the Jewish community needed to be "strong".
"We need to be strong. We need to go to the synagogue. And yes, we need to be not afraid, but to reinforce the security around us, to look everywhere," Chmouel Lubecki said.
French police shot and killed a man armed with a knife and a metal bar who is suspected of having set fire to the synagogue.
It was the latest apparent act in a storm of antisemitism roiling France amid the Israel-Hamas war.
