Chechnya - Bitter fighting continues

(12 Aug 1996) T/I: 10:28:49
Fighting in the war torn capital of Chechnya entered its seventh day on Monday (12/8) and gave no signs of letting up. Shots rang out throughout the Staropromyslovksy region of the city, as local residents cowered in housefronts and sprinted from door to door during periodic lulls in the fighting. Chechen rebels were evidently in command of the region, and Russian troops were nowhere to be seen. Just outside
Grozny, refugees could be seen streaming from the city in long
convoys.
