Unpacking Broken Windows Policing | BK Stories

Ricardo Garcia was issued jail time for an offense worth less than $3 as part of a policy known as "Broken Windows Policing", built around the theory that issuing harsh consequences for petty crimes would reduce the number of serious crimes. We hear from Alex Vitale, author of THE END OF POLICING on how this theory of policing is based on historical concerns rather than empirical research. The policy tends to be racially targeted, often arresting New York's homeless population and lower-income citizens.
