The Gray Snake: A Pipeline Spurs a Movement in Brownsville | #BHeard Docs
In 2017, National Grid began work on a fracked-gas transmission pipeline in north Brooklyn. Running from Brownsville to a holding facility in Greenpoint, the project was approved by the state -- but not by the communities through which it passes. Activists have been opposing the North Brooklyn Pipeline ever since they learned of it in the summer of 2020. For a new environmental collective, the Brownsville Residents Green Committee and cofounder Gabriel Jamison, the stakes feel particularly high; for them, it’s not only an issue of environmental protection but also the latest wrong in a long history of environmental injustice.
#BHeard: Sidewalk Civics is a six-part series on civic engagement, with character-driven stories that illustrate how citywide or neighborhood issues affect individuals and how they're then inspired -- or driven -- to push back, organize, and fight to fix what's wrong.
