Scottsboro: Impressions in Black and White

The case of the "Scottsboro boys," nine Black youths falsely accused of rape in 1931, inspired two leftist artists, Ralph Austin and Lin Shi Khan, to create a cycle of more than 50 prints, "Scottsboro: A Story in Linocuts." In this virtual talk co-presented with The Wolfsonian Public Humanities Lab, Miami artist Rhea Leonard and University of Texas historian Minkah Makalani discuss the intersections among art, politics, and racial identity in this 1930s work—one of the most powerful visual expressions of the U.S. Communist Party's fight against white supremacy—and beyond. Moderated by Andrew H. Lee, who edited and compiled the Scottsboro prints for publication by NYU Press in 2002. (Recorded on October 13, 2020.)
