In this tutorial you'll learn how to play Baila/Kaffrinha rhythms on Piano, origination, difference between Baila & Kaffirigna, Features, Portuguese Creole tunes and few lyrics, History etc.. (after the arrival in 1505, the Portuguese began to convert the Sinhalese to Roman Catholicism, building their wealth and power through the spice and slave trade. As early as 1630, African Kaffirs were brought to Sri Lanka to work as slaves or soldiers) Combinations of western influenced tunes such as "Battle Hymn of the Republic"(Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory) well-known American patriotic song, melody was adapted into the most famous Sinhalese song of Anton Jones "Mini Gawama" & On the Beach at Bali-Bali - Henry"Red" Allen & his Orchestra (1935-1936) this original song was adapted into the famous Sri Lankan song Punsanda Paya Moratuwa Dilenna. 6/8 & 12/8 r.h cross rhythms & 3/4 bass, Pawaan corawade tame (Eu aqui sentade minha noana,boss par me lembrade similar the first part of the song "Cooranjaneetha - A.E Manoharan 1970",Kaffrinha rhythm step by step, Simple tunes basically 3 chords 1,1V,1,V7 & 1,1V,1V,1 1,V7,V7,1 Chord progressions & improvisations. 20th century scores of Kaffrinhas arranged for the Piano by Norbert Rodrigo (Ceylonese Dances)and S.Vincent Rodrigo's 'Ceylonese Lancers on Caffringha Airs', Ceylon Portuguese Creole tune "Vi minh'amor pra baila Dos minha forcam te desia Tem isti dia nossa alagria Vi minha juntu pra baila (I saw my love for dancing My strength falls down This is our day, I saw my dance together) "Vi minh'amor pra baila" tune was adapted to famous Sri Lankan song "Mee Wadayaki Jeewithe" C.T Fernando(Film~Kawda Hari 1959). So many 6/8 & 12/8 mix patterns and variations are there in African folk/ethnic music such as Yoruba, Soli, Tambu, Sorsonet, Fume fume, Kenkeni, Djabara, Bikutsi, Bembe African drums, cowbell patterns mixed with Afro-Cuban, Afro-Brazilian, Afro-Haitian etc. Jazz music originated in African American communities of New Orleans - United States, Congo Square in New Orleans, Jazz Swing, African slave trade 1450-1808, Atlantic triangular slave trade. "Papare" a form of music which originated in Sri Lanka,adopted from Sinhala baila/Kaffiringa music which in turn finds its roots in the Portuguese colonisation, mostly play at cricket matches, similar tune ,Tamil song"Dingiri Dingaaley Meenatchi,Dingiri Dingaley(Tamil film"Anbu Engey1958) ,Irene Josephine-Wally Bastiansz, Chuda Manike Balala. Afro-European links of Baila and Kaffrinha are rekindling an interest in the music of Sri Lankan with African and European ancestry, Descendants of the Kaffir slaves are still a distinctive community found in Sirambiadiya near in Puttalam of Sri Lanka & also in Batticaloa Sri Lankan Burghers(the Descendants from Portuguese) when compare the Music of Kaffirs, in Puttalam and Batticaloa Sri Lankan Burghers distinctive differences are there. When considering, specially Puttalam Sirambiadiya Kaffirs Music, even though their ethnonym is Kaffir but their music is mistakenly assumed to be Kaffrinha, because their songs are accompanied exclusively by percussion instruments such as Dolki drums as well as many makeshift instruments such as coconut shells, tablespoons & sound of an empty bottle by a coin. Lyrics of manhas/manjas mostly in Ceylon/Sri Lanka Portuguese but the melodies are different from the Batticaloa Kaffirinhas, Particularly in Batticaloa Sri Lankan Burghers they use Violin, Acoustic Guitar, Tambourine etc, accompanying instruments of their Kaffirigna songs/cantigas. Anyway these people are an asset to Sri Lanka.
