Hyundai Nexo can drive farther and charge faster than a hydrogen-powered Tesla

Hyundai Nexo can drive farther and charge faster than a hydrogen-powered Tesla Hyundai has been part of the handful of automakers that drive electric vehicles with a fuel cell for years. The Hyundai Nexo is their latest effort to compete against the Toyota Mirai and the Honda Clarity Fuel Cell, as well as the upcoming models of the likes of Mercedes-Benz. This time, the Hyundai fuel cell vehicle is armed with a larger range and new driver assistance technology. Launched Monday at CES, the Nexo picks up the space left by the FCEV of Tucson, Hyundai's first attempt to mass-produce a hydrogen-powered vehicle that was available to customers in parts of North America, Europe and Asia for to lease. While the Nexus has proportions similar to Tucson's current compact SUV, it sits on its own platform that Hyundai says allows for better packaged powertrains and fuel tanks, as well as a reduction in weight. This allows more space for passengers, better aerodynamics and improved acceleration and efficiency. Compared to the Tucson FCEV, Hyundai says the Nexus is 20 percent better at 0-60 mph and has a top speed that is 25 percent higher than the previous car. While the time of 0-60 is 9.5 seconds and far superior to that of the Honda Clarity Fuel Cell, at least it is in the stadium of a Toyota Prius. And, of course, that level of performance allows for a range of 370 miles before having to stop at a hydrogen filling station almost all in the Los Angeles and San Francisco Bay areas at this time for five minutes to stock up and keep going.
