Some facts.
The black rhinoceros is a mammal that prefers to eat exclusively plant foods.
There are two types of rhinoceroses in nature - the black rhinoceros and the white rhinoceros, while there are as many as four subspecies of black rhinoceroses.
Bicornis bicornis is the most common subspecies, found primarily in arid areas. These are the northeastern and southwestern territories of Namibia.
Bicornis minor is a relatively numerous subspecies, whose habitats are associated with the southeastern part of Namibia, with the expanses of Tanzania, Zambia and Mozambique, as well as with the territories of the northeastern regions of Africa.
Bicornis michaeli is a subspecies that is found only in Tanzania.
Bicornis longipes - A subspecies that lives in the vast expanses of Cameroon.
To date, it is believed that the subspecies of the Cameroonian rhinoceros has disappeared from the face of the earth, since it is an extinct subspecies of the black rhinoceros living in the vastness of Cameroon, although the remaining subspecies have survived in Africa, as well as in other territories. In 2013, the IUCN International Organization declared that the Cameroonian subspecies does not exist as a species of rhinoceros, as it was the victim of poachers. He was last seen in 2006.
Despite the fact that the other three subspecies occur in nature, they are on the verge of extinction. Experts believe that suggestions that black rhinoceroses may disappear in the near future in the same way as the Cameroonian subspecies cannot be taken literally. One of the teams of biologists, as a result of research, stated that 1/3 of the black rhinoceroses, which some experts consider extinct, can actually exist calmly in the natural environment.
Appearance
Black rhinoceroses are relatively large mammals, whose body weight can reach up to 3 and a half tons. Adults grow up to 3.2 meters in length, while its height can reach one and a half meters. This animal is characterized by the fact that there are 2 horns on its face, although there are individuals in some areas of the African continent whose faces grow from 2 to 5 horns. Black rhinoceroses have regularly rounded horns, compared to white rhinoceroses, which are characterized by trapezoidal horns. The largest, as a rule, is the front horn, the length of which can reach up to 0.6 meters.
The main color of a rhinoceros largely depends on the color of the soil in the animals’ habitats. These animals simply love to wallow in dust or dirt, as this saves them from various insects and parasites. As a result, the original gray shade of their skin takes on a slightly different shade. In areas where the ground is based on solidified lava, black rhinoceroses acquire a corresponding shade of skin color. In the black rhinoceros, the upper lip is somewhat pointed, while it hangs over the lower lip, which distinguishes this species from the white rhinoceros. With the help of this lip, in the form of a small trunk, the animal easily tears off branches and leaves from bush vegetation.
Where does it live?
At the beginning of the last century, a large population of black rhinoceroses lived in the territories of Eastern and Southern Africa, while in the central part of South Africa the population was less numerous. Within a fairly short period of time, poachers exterminated most of the animals, and not just rhinoceroses. As a result, many African animals, including black rhinoceroses, ended up living in national parks in order to protect them from poachers.
Black rhinoceroses feed exclusively on vegetation of various origins. It prefers arid areas covered with various types of vegetation, while the black rhinoceros can also be found in semi-desert areas, although this is rather an exception to the rule. These animals practically cannot swim, so they avoid areas with various water barriers.
Reproduction and offspring
Every month and a half, black rhinos are ready to begin mating again, with females beginning to pursue males. Females are ready for the breeding process after reaching 3 or 4 years of age. As for males, they mature at this point no earlier than 7 years of age, or even 9 years. After fertilization, the female carries her future offspring for 16 and a half months, after which one rhinoceros calf is born. The newly born baby is characterized by a pink tint to the color of its body, as well as the presence of all folds and outgrowths, although it does not yet have horns. Living in the natural environment, these mammals live for about seven decades. Unfortunately, not every one of them manages to live to such an old age.
