The Sonatina in G Major for Violin And Piano | FT. Pianist Mariel Ilusorio & Violinist Denise Huang

The FEU Center for the Arts presents Antonin Dvorak’s Sonatina in G Major for Violin and Piano, Op. 100 featuring pianist Mariel Ilusorio and Violinist Denise Huang. The concert featured pianist Mariel Ilusorio, violinist Denise Huang, and soprano Anna Migallos. They performed Twilight Way from Poetic Tone Pictures for solo piano, Humoresque arranged for violin, the Sonatina and Romance for violin and piano, In Folk Tone, Gypsy Songs, and Song to the Moon from the opera Rusalka. These performances were all recorded in the historic FEU Auditorium. Two of them were recorded on the exact date of Dvorak’s 180th birthday, September 8, 2021. ***** The Sonatina is “a title applied by the composer to a piece that is in basic sonata form, but is shorter and lighter in character, or technically more elementary, than a typical sonata.” (Wikipedia) Dvorak’s Sonatina in four movements was written in the US at the end of 1893 right before the first performance of his New World Symphony in New York. The music combines the composer's Bohemian flare and America's native music. This is music by a visitor who was seeing America with Czech-colored glasses. This op. 100 was dedicated to his six children to commemorate the completion of his 100th work and was meant to be within technical reach of young people. He spent some time in Spillville, a Czech community he visited in Iowa that preserved the traditions, language, and culture of his country, where he felt closest to home. Thus, he was inspired to combine Bohemian and American elements in this charming work.
