Helsinki Biennial "The Same Sea." The sight-specific work "Repeating Pattern" in former Pilot's House in Vallisaari, Helsinki, Finland. Video: Peteris Viksna. Music: Kaspars Groševs. "The installation reflects on what it was like to grow up on the isolated military island from the 1950s to the 1970s. It spans two apartments in Block D of the Pilot's House. The first apartment plunges into memories of swimming lessons, while the other takes us in search of a secret cave. Meldere documents childhood memories of the former residents through paintings bearing visible traces of the people who lived there decades ago. Objects and memories recalled from childhood tend to be transfigured into something larger and more magical than they really were."
