Trumpetfish

TRUMPETFISH - Aulostomus maculatus The Trumpetfish is the master of disguise. A sleek fish with the ability to change colour. Using soft corals and larger fish for cover, he has no problem blending in. When hunting the trumpet fish will hover vertically with its mouth facing down waiting for smaller fish to come within striking distance. When the opportunity arises it sucks its prey in using a method called pipette feeding. They can relax their jaw to the same diameter as their body and even stretch a little further if a extra juicy morsel swims by. Trumpetfish are relatives of the seahorse and as such have very similar breeding patterns. After a courtship dance the female passes her eggs over to the male who fertilises them and carries them in a pouch until they are born.
