Why are Classical Guitar Necks Flat?

Why are the necks on Classical (Nylon String) Guitars totally Flat? - Dominic - Honolulu Hawaii A). The neck of the Classical guitar is very unique compared to the neck of both electric and acoustic steel string guitars. To fully understand the concept of the Classical's flat fingerboard, we really need to 1st address why arched fingerboards exist in the first place. The arched guitar fingerboards (on guitars other than the Classical) have a purpose that's focused more toward the fretboard-hand. The fretting-hand conforms far easier to the curved surface and this especially helps the index finger when we go to execute a barre techniques -- such as one of the common barre chords. The flat fingerboard of the Classical guitar helps the fingerstylist's plucking hand since this flat fingerboard design allows the plucking hand to better track the strings when performing. The finger-picking playing style requires the strings to be aligned at a uniform level for both accuracy & ease of playing. If Classical guitars had a curved fret-board, then the plucking hand would have to reach awkwardly for many fingerstyle techniques. Also, one other detail on this whole topic is the bridge design. With arched fret-board guitars we have a curved bridge. And, this type of bridge which is essential to an arched fret-board guitar, would not only adversely effect the tone of the Classical Guitar, but it would put needless stress upon the Classical Guitar's more delicate style of construction & design.
