Fabulous Nicklaus Brothers - 02 “Blue Holiday” (Chico, CA 1990)

In 1990, Chico’s “The Fabulous Nicklaus Brothers” were a project of three local musicians that got out of hand pretty quickly. What began as a plan to record a Christmas song for Chico residents stationed overseas in the Gulf War turned into a multi-year project, with two packed-house shows at Laxson incorporating multiple bands and a full gospel choir. Local players Greg Scott (Greg Scott Band), Kurt Kearnes (Rosey Bones, Hamlet), and Eric Stoldahl (Greg Scott Band) wrote and recorded a few tracks in 1990, had some tapes made, and shipped them off to Chicoans in the Persian Gulf. They also handed a few out locally, and some of those copies started to get airplay on local radio. The unexpected success created demand for a live show, which rapidly grew from their initial plan to play at a local restaurant to two multi-artist extravaganzas at Laxson in 1991 and 94. The band’s original 5-song cassette was reissued on CD in 2000.
