The nominal monetary unit of Azerbaijan is the manat which consists of 100 qapiks. In circulation are coins of 1, 3, 5, 10, 20 and 50 qapiks.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, in Azerbaijan, 15 August 1992, it introduced a new monetary unit - manat.
Since the beginning of 2002 to early 2005 the exchange rate was relatively stable (changed within 4770-4990 manats per US dollar). Since spring 2005 there has been a slight but steady increase in the value of the manat against the US dollar; the reason most likely was to increase the inflow of petrodollars into the country, and generally high oil prices on the world market . At the end of 2005, one dollar was worth 4591 manat. Banknotes below 100 manat had virtually disappeared by 2005, as well as coins - geeky. Coins were issued in denominations of 5, 10, 20 and 50 qapiks in 1992 and 1993. Some of the coins in 1992 was manufactured from copper and copper-Nickel alloys, then all the coins were made of aluminum.
1 January 2006 in turn introduced the new manat, which was exchanged at the ratio of 1:5000 old manats. From 1 October 2005, all prices, facilitating the transition has been specified and the new and old manats. Old manat remained in force until 31 December 2006. Coin 50 kopecks from the new release is very similar to a coin of € 2(euros).
