Face Detection In Real Time Using OpenCV In Python

OpenCV (Open Source Computer Vision Library) is a library of programming functions mainly aimed at real-time computer vision OpenCV provides a training method (see Cascade Classifier Training) or pretrained models, that can be read using the cv::CascadeClassifier::load method. The pretrained models are located in the data folder in the OpenCV installation. The following code example will use pretrained Haar cascade models to detect faces and eyes in an image. First, a cv::CascadeClassifier is created and the necessary XML file is loaded using the cv::CascadeClassifier::load method. Afterwards, the detection is done using the cv::CascadeClassifier::detectMultiScale method, which returns boundary rectangles for the detected faces or eyes. Object Detection using Haar feature-based cascade classifiers is an effective object detection method proposed by Paul Viola and Michael Jones in their paper, "Rapid Object Detection using a Boosted Cascade of Simple Features" in 2001. It is a machine learning based approach where a cascade function is trained from a lot of positive and negative images. It is then used to detect objects in other images. Cascading is a particular case of ensemble learning based on the concatenation of several classifiers, using all information collected from the output from a given classifier as additional information for the next classifier in the cascade. Unlike voting or stacking ensembles, which are multiexpert systems, cascading is a multistage one. Cascading classifiers are trained with several hundred "positive" sample views of a particular object and arbitrary "negative" images of the same size. After the classifier is trained it can be applied to a region of an image and detect the object in question. To search for the object in the entire frame, the search window can be moved across the image and check every location with the classifier.
