Nov 2, 2025 Join me for a calm early morning walk through the beautiful twin villages of Shipton Oliffe and Shipton Solers, often simply known together as The Shiptons. Filmed on a bright autumn morning, this peaceful stroll captures quiet lanes, golden leaves and traditional Cotswold cottages glowing in the early light. ABOUT SHIPTON & SHIPTON OLIFFE These two small villages lie side by side in the Coln Valley, about seven miles east of Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, within the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Both villages are steeped in history, their roots stretching back over 900 years. The name “Shipton” comes from the Old English “sceap-tun”, meaning “sheep farm” — a reminder that this area was once part of the medieval wool trade that brought wealth to the Cotswolds. The second part of each name reflects the manorial families who held the land: the Oliffe family in the 13th century and the Solers family who owned the neighbouring manor. At the heart of Shipton Oliffe stands St Oswald’s Church, originally built in the Norman period (12th century). It still retains its Norman doorway, medieval stonework, and a graceful 15th-century tower. The churchyard overlooks the Coln Valley — especially beautiful in autumn when the trees turn amber and gold. Nearby, traditional Cotswold stone cottages, old farmhouses, and dry-stone walls reflect centuries of craftsmanship. Many date from the 17th and 18th centuries, built during the region’s peak wool-trading era.
