The IS was originally sold in the Toyota Altezza nameplate in Japan from 1998 (the term Altezza is Italian for "highness"). The IS was introduced for an entry-level sport model positioned below the ES inside Lexus lineup. The Altezza name remains used sometimes to refer to chromed car taillights like those designed to the first-generation model, called "Altezza lights".
