Composer: Henry Purcell (1659-1695) Librettist: John Dryden Director: Tang Shu-wing Conductor: Shalev Ad-El Choreographer: John Utans Lighting Designer: John A Williams Performed by Academy Music, Dance and Drama students An enchanting musical tale of love and war! Purcell's King Arthur is a 'dramatick opera' for soloists, chorus and orchestra. The work depicts King Arthur's attempt to unite the ancient Britons and to rescue his fiancee, the blind Princess Emmeline, from the clutches of his arch-enemy, the Saxon King Oswald. With a libretto by John Dryden, King Arthur was first performed in 1691. The English semi-opera, a genre unique to the late seventeenth century, features both music and spoken dialogue. This performance of highlights from the five act original is being given to mark the 350th anniversary of the composer's birth. Opera sung in English with English surtitles
