HDRi manipulation for moving animated objects in close proximity to light sources

The goal of this project is to create and test a solution for manipulated HDRi environment maps in scenes with 3d objects in close proximity to light sources. Based on the project theme for this semester, Audio Visual Experiments – Pre-Rendered Experiences, three different composited videos are created with three different methods of HDRi light setups, one with a static HDRi, one with updated HDRi, and one using interpolated HDRi with triangulated light sources calculated from two HDRi environment maps. The Project consists of two experiments, a preexperiment followed by a final experiment. The pre-experiment investigated the perceived realism of three different light setups, image based lighting, median cut light probe sampling, and manually placed spot lights in 3ds Max. For the final experiment, a Matlab script creating interpolated HDRi maps with triangulated light sources is created and implemented into a composited scene. This video is tested up against a video with a static HDRi and an updating HDRi for every fourth frame. Based on the final experiment it is concluded that interpolated HDRis and triangulated light sources has a significant improvement of the perceived realism of a composited scene with an animated 3D object in close proximity to light sources, compared to a scene with a static or updating HDRi setup.
