Should Davey be allowed on "who wants to be a millionaire ?"
Davey developed the unique system of communication he now uses. When he was about two years old I said to him, Id love to be able to talk to you, and he went click click with his tongue. Does that mean something? I asked. click click he replied. Does that mean yes? I asked. Click click he replied. What is no? I asked. Click he replied and that is how click talk was born.
Since then Davy has been able to answer complex questions with Yes/No answers and he can spell things out using an alphabetic grid we keep in mind. It is remarkably fast to get a complex multi-word reply.
What he really wants and deserves is a computer, and the technology exists to interface his clicks to a keyboard and mouse, but the big need is for an engineer to put Davy and the computer together, and that costs money. So if he wins anything on Millionaire he will put it toward a communication system so he can speak to anyone, not just to the few of us who have learned his system.
Until August 2001 Davy was simply a cerebral palsied person, but then he had a bowel blockage that put him in the hospital off and on for two years. He emerged weighing 72 pounds with a colonoscopy, a tracheostomy and a feeding tube, plus huge bedsores. Thelma and I took over his care, eventually supplemented by Medicaid and now by Medicare as well. He has regained his weight and still has the trache stoma and the stoma from the feeding tube and of course the colonoscopy. He also has a great appreciation for life having been so close to death. He is brave and adventurous and really wants to have the opportunity to show people what he can do.
