EXERCISE METABOLICS #6: MAGNESIUM AND MUSCLE- Magnesium is an important mineral that is concentrated in your muscles. Magnesium provides the energy together with specialized enzymes, glucose, and high energy phosphate bonds in ATP (adenosine triphosphate). Muscles contract when a nerve signal activates each muscle group, but to relax the muscles need adequate Magnesium. To reduce muscle cramps, drink your Sports Drink with Magnesium, other electrolytes and glucose. You can also get magnesium from dark chocolate (70 to 90 percent cocoa) and dark green leafy vegetables. Warm up your muscles and stretch and roll them before and after exercise to keep them relaxed. Muscle recovery is a key to avoiding cramps-so be sure to have a Protein-Rich Shake with 20 grams or more of protein within 30 minutes to one hour after exercise and drink 6 to 8 cups of fluids per day including water, tea, or coffee.
