Suggested Teaching Sequence:
1. Exploring numbers 20-50 using multiple 10-frames.
2. Building representations of numbers 20-50 using multi-link cubes and base-10 blocks.
3. Developing familiarity with the place value chart and transitioning the physical models to the place value mat.
4. Writing numerals for numbers 20-50.
5. Sequencing numbers 20-50.
6. Comparing numbers 20-50.
Extension Activities:
Building 2-digit numbers through novel representations, represent personal collections of objects using base-10 blocks, counting by twos and fives to 50. Using Matholia’s Place Value Chart tool to see the chart in action.
