Noah Marlowe National Board Dvar Torah: Parshat Vayachi
Noah Marlowe's NCSY National Board Dvar Torah on Parshat Vayachi:
Guiding Questions:
1. Why does the Torah use the word "ויחי", "and he lived", as opposed to a more common word such as "ויהי","and it was"?
2. Why does the Torah tell us that Yaakov lived in Egypt for 17 years? Couldn't we have done the math ourselves? Why is it important that he was there for that amount time?
3. When referring to the years of Yaakov's life, the Torah lists the years in an odd way: 7, then 40, and then 100 years. It is rather unusual to have this odd structure; it would be more common to have it listed: 100, 40, and then 7 years. Why does the Torah reverse the order?
