Restoration Cast Iron Stove Fireplace
In today's video, we are restoring (or reconditioning) an Intrepid II 1990 Cast Iron Stove produced by Vermont Castings. Originally a white pearl color, this Intrepid II cast iron wood burning stove had seen its better days. We purchased this unit for a family project. Upon hitting the market, these Intrepid II 1990 model stoves retailed for approximately $2,200.00.
We agreed to purchase this stove from a private seller for $550.00. Upon purchase completion, the stove had a broken cooking griddle, broken griddle handle, deep chips in the pearl white paint and rope fire gaskets in need of replacement, specifically the front door (2) gaskets, and the griddle gasket. The catalytic converter lever was also missing.
Steps we took to recondition this stove:
1. Disassembled stove
2. Wire brush (to scuff) paint with pneumatic rotary grinder.
3. Clean with Spray Away Glass Cleaner found at Menards & Wa-Mart, etc.
4. Apply (3) primer coats. Rustoleum Farm & Implement Heavy Duty Primer
5. Apply (3) single stage coats. Rustoleum Cardinal Red.
6. Reassemble stove.
7. Install new rope fire gaskets where needed.
8. Install new stove top griddle & lever.
What did we learn?
Let me tell you, these are heavy. They way around 350lbs and you can feel each pound packed into this very compact unit. Anyone purchasing or moving one of these Intrepid stoves should utilize a helper to team lift. The overall weight of the unit can be reduced for transportation by removing the stove top griddle, front doors, internal fire grate and ash tray and finally, the cast iron foot pegs. This will greatly reduce the weight and make it possible for 1 person to move the stove a short distance, however, please use caution and or continue to utilize the team lift approach.
How much did this project cost?
1. Stove purchase $550.00
2. Paint and paint supplies $30.00
3. DIY labor $0.00
4. Total cost: $580.00
By completing this project via DIY and using cost effective materials, we were able to recondition this Intrepid II Cast Iron Stove for a very economical price. In the end, we have about 16 hours of time into this project.
What is the stove worth after reconditioning?
The stove is worth what someone is willing to pay. Thankfully, we aren't even thinking about those numbers because this is a personal family project. We hope to enjoy the stove for a long time to come. If we were to list the stove in it's freshly reconditioned state, we would ask somewhere between $1,500 and $1,800.
Thanks for hanging out with us in the garage today! We hope you enjoyed this video & project.
