Western Hedgehog Erinaceus europaeus mother and baby feeding together

It is difficult to believe that any animal is more charming than a baby Hedgehog Erinaceus europaeus. The animals shown here are a female that had been released into the wild as part of a re-establishment of this species in an area from which it had disappeared and one of a litter of three youngsters that she produced, having been mated whilst in the custody of a wildlife hospital. Both have been colour-marked with oil-based paint on their spines. They were seen again the following year by which time the baby female had become fully adult.
