My Garden Path: Bernadine and Andrew Jones

Bernadine and Andrew met at horticultural college and have worked ‘about 40 years’ in the nursery industry, so they know a thing or two about plants. Andrew used to be Millie’s boss and she’s finally come to visit their garden. There are loads of roses, lupins, open lawn areas, perennials, camellias, winding hedges, and annual colour. But 30 years ago it was a bare block with only a few gums and wattle trees. Their first planting was a flowering plum (Prunus cv.) that is an umbrella of pink that shelters four large seats underneath. “Start with something small and easy,” is Andrew’s advice to new gardeners. Bernadine says many of the plants she put in were rescued from the ‘sick bay’ at the nursery where they worked, picked at random for some redeeming feature. “We’re not about set colour we just love colour,” says Andrew. Millie remembers Andrew telling her to ‘dig holes’ if she was ever looking at a property to buy. However, Andrew and Bernadine bought the property they loved and later discovered the soil was tough clay with no topsoil. Over the years they have improved it by adding as much organic matter as possible in the form of compost and organic mulch, which breaks down and slowly makes the soil more manageable. Bernadine also keeps chickens and has four chook houses. Serious egg layers get upgraded to Chookingham Palace, which even has its own chandelier. Gardening is so good for mental and physical health, says Bernadine. It’s the best detox.
