Forward Zone File Explained | Domain Name System | Mastering BIND DNS Server
Forward Zone File Explained.
In Domain Name System (DNS), a forward zone file is a file that maps domain names to IP addresses. It is used to translate human-readable domain names (such as www.example.com) into the corresponding IP addresses (such as 172.24.0.1) that computers use to communicate with each other over the Internet.
The forward zone file typically contains resource records (RRs) that specify the following information:
The domain name being resolved (the left-hand side of the record)
The type of the record (e.g., A, MX, CNAME, etc.)
The value of the record (the right-hand side of the record)
For example, the following record in a forward zone file maps the domain name www.example.com to the IP address 172.24.0.1:
www.example.com. IN A 172.24.0.1
In this example:
www.example.com. is the domain name being resolved.
IN is the class of the record (usually IN for Internet).
A is the type of the record (an address record).
172.24.0.1 is the IP address associated with the domain name.
There may be many other types of records in a forward zone file, including:
MX records, which specify the mail server(s) for a domain
CNAME records, which specify aliases for domain names
NS records, which specify the authoritative name servers for a domain
Overall, the forward zone file plays a crucial role in DNS resolution and allows users to access websites and services by domain name rather than by IP address.
$TTL 1D: this time to live directive specifies for how much time zone data will be kept in cache by the resolvers. It can be specified at the top of zone files.
“;” represents comments
the syntax of resource records(RR) is
domain ttl class type rdata
domain: current domain or some specific domain. “@” represents originating domain. in this case “example.com”.
ttl: for how long the record will be cached. if nothing is specified, it will take the value from “$TTL” directive specified in the beginning.
class: record classification mostly “IN”. if left empty, “IN” is assumed.
type: type of record such as “SOA”, “A”, “PTR”, “CNAME”, “NS”, “MX” etc.
rdata: particular record data
