Forward Zone File Explained. In Domain Name System (DNS), a forward zone file is a file that maps domain names to IP addresses. It is used to translate human-readable domain names (such as www.example.com) into the corresponding IP addresses (such as 172.24.0.1) that computers use to communicate with each other over the Internet. The forward zone file typically contains resource records (RRs) that specify the following information: The domain name being resolved (the left-hand side of the record) The type of the record (e.g., A, MX, CNAME, etc.) The value of the record (the right-hand side of the record) For example, the following record in a forward zone file maps the domain name www.example.com to the IP address 172.24.0.1: www.example.com. IN A 172.24.0.1 In this example: www.example.com. is the domain name being resolved. IN is the class of the record (usually IN for Internet). A is the type of the record (an address record). 172.24.0.1 is the IP address associated with the domain name.
