COLIN: My name's Colin Hughes I'm a tutor in Fitted Interiors. GARY: My name's Gary Cook and I'm an electrical lecturer at East Durham College. JAMES: My name's James Foscoe and I'm the tiling tutor for the Floor & Wall. COLIN: The students will come to me over 32 weeks and they will be learning kitchen fitting, bathroom fitting, shower fitting. Learn how to apply render to external walls or internally. GARY: They'll learn how to wire up houses, sockets, lights, industrial fire alarms. JAMES: About the adhesives, specifications, background preparation, the cuts, and how to deal with uneven walls. Plying boards, daub and dab work. Gas cookers, central heating boilers, water heaters. COLIN: How to worktops, cupboards, sinks and all the integrated furniture, how to fit cookers, washing machines, dishwashers. Runs floor screeding on top of that. GARY: The renewables is touched on now, it's just a broad overview of all the renewables that are on offer. They will then be a specialism when you complete whichever avenue you go down. The renewables will be wind turbines, the positioning, how to fix them, how to guage what you're going to get from them. And we also do photovoltaic, which is the panels you see up on the roofs everywhere, how to design a system. [music] COLIN: Before I came to the college I was self-employed for 30 years, so I've got 30 years experience building houses, extensions, garages, fitting many many kitchens and many bathroom suites throughout the years. These are the skills that I am now passing onto the students. JAMES: The quality of the teaching is top of the range, you can't get any better. We've got a brand new facility which is amazing. Everything is high-tech, everything is brand new. The students get to use all the facilities. All the tools that we bring in are top of the range, all the materials are top of the range. GARY: We have a huge workshop area here which far exceeds the requirements of most of the colleges round this area. ROB: Another important side of the academy which I think is quite unique to the area is that we're forging a lot of links with leading construction companies; inviting them on board to come and help and advise the tutors and students and to give their feedback as to what the industry is looking for out there. I think it's important that we're able to offer what the construction companies need in the future in terms of jobs. GARY: In the second year placements are required or a job. We do try and find placements for people if we can and we do have a good list of employers who will regularly take people. JAMES: Once they've finished they can actually start their own business, fingers crossed. It would be nice to see them with the van with their names on. [music]
