FOUR NOCTURNES BY GEORGE CRUMB (NIGHT MUSIC II) for Violin and Piano

Notturno I: Serenamente　静かに穏やかに Notturno II: Scorrevole; Vivaceo possible　流れるように;可能な限り速く Notturno III: Contemplativo　瞑想的に Notturno IV: Con un sentimento di nostalgia　ノスタルジックな感情を持って The music is of the utmost delicacy and the prevailing sense of "suspension in time" is only briefly interrupted by the animated and rhythmically more forceful second piece. The sustained lyric idea presented at the beginning of the work, the nervous tremolo effects, and the stylized bird songs are all recurrent elements. In composing the Four Nocturnes I had attempted a modification of the traditional treatment of the violin-piano combination by exploiting various timbral resources of the instruments. Thus a certain integration in sound is achieved by requiring both instruments to produce harmonics, pizzicato effects, rapping sounds (on the wood of the violin; on the metal beams of the piano). The gentle rustling sounds which conclude the work are produced by the application of a percussionist's wire brush to the strings of the piano. こ の音楽は極限の繊細さを持ち、全体を占める"テンポの一時的停止"は、活発で力強いリズム感が特徴の第2曲目では少しの間鳴りをひそめる。出だしで示され る持続性のある叙情的モチーフ、ナーバスなトレモロ効果、そして様式化された鳥のさえずりといった要素はたびたび登場する。 作曲する上で、従来の 伝統的なヴァイオリンとピアノの組み合わせの扱いを避け、様々な音色を生み出す手段を楽器から探し出す試みがなされている。どちらの楽器にもハーモニクス やピツィカートを要求したり、ヴァイオリンでは木の部分、ピアノでは金属の梁の部分を叩く音を融合するなどしている。終曲の静かなサラサラといった音は打 楽器奏者が使うワイヤーブラシでピアノの弦 に当てて出している。
