Ants are just a sign

Ants themselves aren't the problem. They can make things worse, though, and they're a sign for us to look out for. Ants feed off of the nectar and honeydew produces by aphids. In turn, the ants will protect the aphids, even fighting off ladybugs. So if you're seeing a lot of ants on your fruit trees, it's probably a sign that you have aphids, wooly scale, or something else going on that you need to address.
