How Chess Software Teaches Chess Masters

NEWSLETTER ✉️ http://DylanCurious.com PATREON ? https://patreon.com/DylanCurious (Monthly Video Call) Hey there, this is Dylan Curious from the YouTube channel, "Curious Future". In today's video, we're diving into an extraordinary chess showdown featuring Magnus Carlsen, arguably one of the smartest minds on the planet, and eight super grandmasters teaming up against an AI chess software, Stockfish. This battle is a representation of human intellect versus cutting-edge machine intelligence, showcasing the two branches of chess competition that exist today: human versus human, and human versus AI chess engines. With artificial intelligence rapidly evolving, it's important to keep abreast of these advancements. In this video, we discuss the history of AI in chess, demonstrating how this technology changes the way our society functions over time. We also highlight various chess engines available on the internet, each surpassing the abilities of the world's best human player. We delve into an interesting occurrence in the chess community, where the world chess champion Magnus Carlsen recently experienced a surprising loss against a much lower ranked player, Hans Niemann. This intriguing defeat had us examining the strategy of chess AI systems, noting how they tend to grind out long games, quite similar to Hans' winning method. This incident opens up a broader discussion on the increasingly blurred line between 'regular' humans and 'augmented' humans, a conversation that is not limited to the realm of chess but extends to areas like job applications, coding challenges, and homework. Next, we discuss the evolution of Chess AI. It started with 64 squares and millions of players worldwide, and moved towards artificial intelligence, from Deep Thought's defeat against Garry Kasparov in 1989 to Deep Blue's victory over Kasparov in 1996. The real AI revolution happened between 2010 to 2015, culminating in Google's AlphaZero, a system trained and learning from experience. In 2017, AlphaZero beat Stockfish, the best chess system of that time, marking a pivotal moment in chess AI history. These AI chess engines have ratings well above 3500, dwarfing Carlsen's ELO rating of 2864, signifying a considerable skill difference. This journey began in 1951, with Alan Turing playing the first game against a computer. What followed were decades of development of chess game engines, largely relying on complex logic machines and hand-coded rules until the advent of AlphaZero.
