Taylor Baby BT2e set up

Here I'm setting up Steve's Taylor Baby BT2e. It's a straightforward set up but requires precision to assess the scope for action improvement at each end and to get each end dead right. The Taylor Baby has a bolt-on neck which permits two useful things: 1) you can take the neck off and take the guitar in your luggage more easily when travelling and 2) you can fit Taylor-made shims if your guitar action becomes unplayable over time (due to the deformation of the structure due to string loading or even excessive moisture content in the wood). But, like all guitars, the first port-of-call for action adjustments is via the saddle and this guitar had a pretty tall saddle that appears to be exactly as it left the retailer. So plenty of scope for action reduction to the customer's preferred action. At the nut end we decided to replace the NuBone nut with a Tusq XL one because it is impregnated with Teflon or PTFE for reduced friction. I took great care to get the replacement nut to the correct height without having to file the nut slots. That's becoming an obsession with me: to get the very best of Tusq not only from the built-in lubrication but from un-molested factory moulded slots. The adjustments at both ends of the guitar created a lovely low action with plenty of break angle over the saddle on the often tricky high E and with a very flat neck.
