Largest ranch in New Mexico

Vermejo, located west of Raton, New Mexico, is one of the largest contiguous ranches in the United States, totaling 550,000 acres with about 530,000 acres being contiguous. Ted Turner purchased this ranch from Pennzoil in 1996 and transformed it into a wildlife preserve by removing cattle, interior fencing, and introducing bison. Vermejo operates as a guest ranch for hunting and fishing, featuring multiple lodges, including the 25,000-square-foot Casa Grande. The ranch has conservation programs, such as saving the Rio Grande cutthroat trout and reintroducing black-footed ferrets in 2008. It also has substantial coal bed methane deposits. All acres of this ranch are deeded.
