How Breastmilk is Created

Your baby’s suck and removal of milk from the breast stimulates a hormonal response that tells your body to make more milk. In fact the more you feed, the more milk you will make. This is another reason why unrestricted, or “demand” feeding works better for most mothers and babies than scheduled feeding. Later on, when your breast feeding is established (around 6 weeks) you will most likely find that your baby will want to feed in a more scheduled way. One of the hardest things with breastfeeding is when you are in the hospital you are most likely to be advised to feed your baby every 3 to 4 hours as it is hospital policy. If this scheduled feeding pattern works for you and your baby – then keep doing it! Remember it is your body, your baby and your journey. Empowering women to achieve the kind of birth they desire, focusing on keeping it real and empowering through knowledge.
