How Adobe Live Migrated to Kubernetes - Sean Isom (Adobe)

Kubernetes is quickly becoming the industry standard container orchestration framework. Despite broad cloud provider support and a plethora of standardized tooling for onboarding new workloads, many organizations have made significant investments in other frameworks over past years preventing them from fully jumping into Kubernetes. At Adobe we have invested in building Ethos, a full containerization and clusterization platform. Ethos was originally built on top of DC/OS and Mesos, but we recently reimplemented our cluster backend with Kubernetes given the massive growth it has experienced over the past 5 years. After successful adoption, we had to build plans for a seamless, complete migration to Kubernetes for all our existing services to reduce our overhead. As we would soon find out, this would be a massive effort filled with many technical challenges and pitfalls needing quick solutions at scale. Come listen as Sean Isom, Engineering Manager at Adobe on the Ethos project, describes Adobe’s trial by fire journey of live migrating over 5000 service environments from DC/OS to Kubernetes while simultaneously swapping operating systems and load balancing architectures. Hear our lessons learned from “building the airplane while flying it” and learn how we were able to successfully and fully migrate to Kubernetes in months, not years. You'll learn how to: • Utilize existing abstractions, building upon the good and cleaning up the bad • Design for resiliency and flexibility, avoiding common pitfalls that can cause client pain • Learn from our experiences tuning ingress and egress, dns performance, overlay networks, capacity management, logging, and more • Build and reuse existing automation and tooling to enforce standardization • Roll out a major technology change across multiple business units with minimal friction
