Recogning Lawrence Orr's legacy

More than 140 years ago a man named Lawrence Orr was born. He was the 7th child of Alexander and Allice Orr who were formerly enslaved in what is now the Hickory Grove neighborhood of Charlotte. Orr grew up in a time where Black children were forced to go to school miles away from their neighborhood. Despite this, he became a pillar in Charlotte’s Black community petitioning for new schools for Black children in the area. In 2015 he received the honor of having a school named after him. In 2023 his descendants are working to continue his legacy and keep his story alive. Read more about it here: https://www.wcnc.com/article/news/fff/275-03fb6754-0356-40b5-872e-a12ad37071c5
