Nuclear Science and Technology for Food Security in Malaysia

First of all, we had introduced to climate change and explained how it can affect food access to human beings. Food security was discussed as a way to end food hunger as suggested in the UN Sustainable Development Goals. In our virtual Biology classroom, we had spread out the information about the application and benefits of nuclear technology in agriculture. We had discussed two plants which were paddy and mushroom that had been exposed to nuclear rays to improve their seed quality and rate of production. We had also invited nuclear experts to share their real-life experiences dealing with nuclear technology in improving agriculture products in Malaysia. Students were given the opportunity to ask questions regarding nuclear technology to our experts. Other activities were also created for the students namely answering online quizzes and producing interesting posters as well as short videos on nuclear just to share their feelings and experiences within this program. In conclusion, based on the comparison between pre-test and post-test analysis, we had concluded that this simple program is a success. It has been given a significant impact on students’ understanding of the benefits of Nuclear Science and Technology.
