The company that makes Similac, Abbott Laboratories, is voluntarily recalling approximately five million cans and containers of Similac powder infant formulas because they may be contaminated with insects - specifically, beetles, or beetle larvae. The recall affects certain powder infant formulas sold in the U.S., Puerto Rico, Guam and parts of the Caribbean. The decision by Abbott to recall certain Similac powder infant formulas was reportedly made after an internal quality review found "the presence of a small common beetle" in a product produced at a manufacturing facility in Sturgis, Michigan. The Food and Drug Administration says the formula that contains these beetles "poses no immediate health risk," though infants who consume the tainted formula "experience symptoms of gastrointestinal discomfort and refusal to eat as a result of small insect parts irritating the GI tract." It is important to note that the Similac recall does not involve any liquid Similac infant formulas - only certain Similac powder formulas. According to the FDA, the recall includes certain Similac powder infant formulas that come in plastic containers and product lines that are sold in "8-ounce, 12.4-ounce and 12.9-ounce cans." The FDA is advising parents and caregivers to log on to www.similac.com/recall and type in the lot number of their Similac product to determine if it's part of the recall. Consumers can also call Abbott's consumer hotline at 1-800-986-8850. Reports on the morning of September 23, 2010, said some consumers were having trouble accessing the Similac recall website, possibly because of high traffic to the site. A spokesperson for Abbott told CNN Money that they are aware of the problem, adding that the company was "still working to try and verify all of the affected lot numbers" of formula. Once that process is complete, "a full list of lot numbers will be released."
