In the 1950s, the Aral Sea was the fourth largest sea on Earth with 67,300 sq km, behind the Caspian Sea, Lake Superior and Lake Victoria. It was particularly rich in fish: it supplied one-sixth of all the fish consumed in the Soviet Union and its canneries exported their products worldwide. For the production of cotton, the Soviet Union destroyed this lake. The global climate change also influenced in the drying of this lake. But now, with the immense effort of countries like Kazakhstan and people near this lake, this lake is returning back.
