Constitutionally unsymmetrical molecules Total no. of stereoisomers = 2n (Where n = number of optical or geometrical centres) Note- All isomers are optical active 2. Constitutionally symmetrical molecules a. With even no of centres (optical or geometrical) Total no. of stereoisomers = 2(n-1) + 2(n/2 -1) Optical active = 2(n-1) Optical inactive (meso) = 2(n/2 -1) b. With odd no of centres (optical or geometrical) Total no. of stereoisomers = 2(n-1) Optical active = 2(n-1) - 2(n-1/2) Optical inactive (meso) = 2(n-1/2) c. Optical centre is at middle Total no. of stereoisomers = 2(n-1) d.
