More than 80% of world's population can't see clear night sky

빛공해로 전세계 인구 80% 깨끗한 밤하늘 못봐 Look up at the evening sky in Seoul... how many stars do you see? A good chance that you won't have vision of the stars, celestial events and the Milky Way - the galaxy that contains our solar system. That's because we're enshrouded in an artificial haze of light that is blocking the night sky, a phenomenon scientists call light pollution. The dangers of having TOO much light - our Oh Jung-hee explains. "The term 'light pollution' refers to the alteration of natural light levels... caused by the excessive amount of artificial light people are exposed to daily. The lights brighten the sky so much... that it's difficult to see the night sky just as it is. Research published in scientific journal Science Advances has revealed the severity of light pollution around the world. More than 80 percent of world's population live under light-polluted skies. The Milky Way is not visible to nearly 80 percent of North Americans, 60 percent of Europeans... and roughly 70 percent of Koreans. On the other hand, the least affected areas are Chad, the Central African Republic and Madagascar,... with more than three-quarters of inhabitants living under pristine skies. Among the G20 countries, it was found that Korea has the second-brightest skies after Saudi Arabia. Canada had the fourth highest exposure, and was followed by the U.S. at sixth, and Japan and Italy at ninth and tenth. Germany and India had the least amount of light-pollution. Experts say the effects of light pollution on the environment and public health cannot be ignored. "Light pollution disrupts the ecosystem,.. and in Korea, Gyeonggi-do province actually saw a decrease in crop production levels. Also, people with excessive exposure to light pollution are more likely to get breast cancer and experience difficulties sleeping because of changes in melatonin secretion." The researchers warn that light pollution needs to be addressed immediately because, though the pollution itself can be mitigated by turning off the lights, the consequences to biodiversity and culture cannot be.
