One of the few scrimshanders who really likes to do WWII scenes, Lehwalder has come up with yet another winner. A Grumman F6F Hellcat departs from a carrier in the Pacific late in the war. A destroyer accompanies the carrier. Normally, there were several destroyers in formation with a carrier in order to protect against its most dangerous enemy, the submarine. The color in this tusk is simply amazing. Bright orange tinted color in the ivory is the result of minerals that have been absorbed into the ivory over a period of hundreds of years. The bright colors suggest a scene early in the morning with the sun's rays lighting up the sky and reflecting off the water. It is truly a "Red Sky in the Morning" scene. The marks on the back and small end of the ivory indicate that is was used as some type of ice ax or digging tool hundreds of years ago in the Northern Bering Sea area. Not much of this ivory around anymore. View this piece and many more at: http://www.scrimshawgallery.com
