Drawing on the final section of Beatrice’s Act I entrance aria – ‘Ah! la pena in lor piombò’ – the variations put the performer through a variety of demanding tests in triplets, repeated notes, scales, and leaps. They also reveal once again the wide expressive scope of the trumpet – its piercing tone suitable both for military heroism and the most tender expressions of intimacy, whether on or off the operatic stage.
