Stinchcomb, a geologic tour of route 66, strata of the Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon exposes what is possibly the most impressive sequence of strata which can be seen at one place with the age relationships of the different layers (formations) all shown. Usually the age relationships of strata have to be pieced together from many different outcrops. Shown first is the Kiabab Limestone, Coconino Sandstone and Hermit Shale, all of Permian age. Below this is the Supai Sandstone of Pennsylvanian (Upper Carboniferous) age. Below this is the Red Wall Limestone of Mississippian (Lower Carboniferous) age. Below the Red Wall occurs Devonian strata (the narration says above by mistake). Strata of the Silurian and Ordovician Periods are missing, Oldest most Paleozoic strata of the canyon is the Bright Angel and Tapets Sandstone. Underlying the Paleozoic strata is that of the Proterozoic Era of Precambrian age. Under the Proterozoic strata is the most ancient strata of the Archean Era.
