Stellaris - Movement Questions

About a year ago, started playing Stellaris again...ran into this issue where on 2 occasions was unable to fly my ships the way I wanted them to go... Situation 1 my ships took the 'scenic' route to another star system... Situation 2 my ships would not leave the system to ensure their safety when an enemy entered my system... Anyone know why (or is this something a patch fixed since then)? Gameplay is from January 2022 but I wanted to start playing again just was curious about this issue and whether it is still a major issue or something or was it fixed or is it something only I have experienced?
