321 The bumblebee travelling salesman The problem is as follows, if you are given a list of cities and the distances between each pair of cities what is the shortest possible route that visits each city and returns to the origin city Sounds tough right , it is, but not for the humble bumble bee They were given a variety of artificial flower feeding stations (cities) at Rothamsted Research in Harpenden The bees were given the possibility of shortcuts between stations that would actually increase the total distance that the bees would have to travel Of course the bees fell for it but as time progressed they refined their flight paths and over time found the most efficient route to visit all flowers and reduce the overall distance they had to travel so they were less exhausted. They looked at 6 bumble bees which made 201 flights using a special radar that could track the transponders on the little bee backs They got an accurate reading of where the bee was every 3 seconds to an accuracy of 2  so simply by the bees exploring their environment That is amazing, bees can't look at a map and plan their route they simply fly around and explore and through that they are able to find the best possible route. They find one flower at a time then have to integrate their position into their spatial memory in relation to the other flowers they visited and find the most efficient way of visiting all the flowers to save as much energy as possible. What can humans gain from this? Yep if you have not guessed it already AI, how we can use this information to help improve movement of autonomous robots whether it's food delivery, cleaning robots or killer robots But on a more positive not it will also help us to understand how to help reduce the problems caused by habitat loss and intensive farming which could save billions of pounds.
