SAM FRANCIS : DISTILLED

Filmed on the occasion of the exhibition, "Sam Francis - Distilled" at Jack Rutberg Fine Arts in Pasadena. Jack Rutberg narrates the film, offering unique insights and reflections on this important artist's works. Sam Francis’ first solo exhibition took place in Paris, France in 1952 at Galerie Nina Dausset. The exhibition was exclusively devoted to monochromatic “white” paintings; some of monumental scale. Francis was also included in a significant Paris exhibition, “Signifiants de l’nformel”, organized by the important critic Michel Tapie, from which Madame Henri Matisse purchased a large black oil painting This filmed exhibition, “Sam Francis – Distilled” shows Francis in full abstract expressionist bloom in his 1970’s return to monochromatic works – meditations achieved through the unique qualities and tonal ranges, and his mastery of lithography.
