BethKatleman Folly
Folly is an art installation of three-dimensional porcelain "wallpaper," created by Beth Katleman and displayed at the Jane Hartsook Gallery in New York from January 20 -- February 17, 2011. Forty-eight three-dimensional tableaus hover nearly a foot off of a painted turquoise wall, surrounded by flowers, birds and butterflies. The overall dimensions are 108 x 192 x 11 inches. Each tableau includes water features, topiaries, architectural follies and figurines, all cast in white porcelain. Dark humor infuses the narratives: an elf rides a giant snail toward the Sacre Coeur Basilica; bridesmaids whisper, oblivious to the baby drowning in the pond; a toothless boy cavorts as a hapless duckling tumbles over a waterfall; and a reindeer answers nature's porcelain call. Wallpaper is by definition something that resides in the background. Its polite familiarity offers an opportunity to disrupt expectations. Although Folly seems innocuous enough at first glance, closer inspection reveals ironic commentaries on contemporary values. Folly borrows from historic decoration to shed light on the nature of consumption and desire in our time.
