During the loose realm of the Kingdom of Mercia, the Danes tightened their control on the coastal towns of the region. The townspeople fled before the raiders inland, causing a strain in the kingdom. Not to mention it nearly backrupted the kingdom from the loss of their trading ports. The nobles of Mercia agreed that the Danes had to be dealt with.
