ELSC-ICNC Seminar: Stephen J. Eglen

A lecture given by: Stephen J Eglen Cambridge Computational Biology Institute, University of Cambridge On the topic of: "Theoretical models of the development of the nervous system" November 22, 2012 Abstract: In this talk I will highlight the utility of theoretical models in understanding two keys steps in the development of the visual system. In the first part of the talk, I describe the structural development of the retina; in particular, how neurons arrange themselves into semi-regular spatial patterns. In the second part, I describe potential mechanisms by which cells in the retina might project to the brain in a topographic manner. I will close by highlighting the role that retinal patterning may or may not influence patterns in cortical orientation preference maps ('pinwheels').
